Miss Kathryn McCarthy MD MBBS FRCS (General Surgery). NHS and private colorectal surgeon.

Kathryn is a colorectal surgeon with a special interest in pelvic floor conditions, particularly anal incontinence. She qualified from University College London in 1998 and has been a consultant surgeon at North Bristol NHS Trust for 8 years. Kathryn is now working as a private surgeon treating piles, anal problems, gut disorders, fissures, childbirth injuries and incontinence problems. In addition she provides private opinions on other disorders such as pilonidal disease and pain.

During higher surgical training, Kathryn completed a year of specialist training in gynaecology at the Princess Ann Hospital, Southampton. At the end of her surgical training, Kathryn undertook a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Glasgow.

Since arriving at North Bristol NHS Trust Kathryn has set up a gastrointestinal (GI) physiology laboratory which is a dedicated service for patients with faecal incontinence and evacuatory disorders. She is an active member of the Bristol wide Pelvic Floor MDT which was one of the first UK centres to be Nationally accredited for Pelvic Floor Surgery by the National Pelvic Floor Society (www.tpfs.org). Kathryn is now offering private anorectal manometry and pressure measurements to help identify anal sphincter injuries and guide anal treatments.

Kathryn has recently completed a 12 month secondment into gynaecology in order to develop services for women with bowel symptoms who have experienced obstetric anal sphincter injuries, those with complex endometriosis and also to further the management of women who have pelvic organ prolapse affecting bowel and vagina.

As a private colorectal surgeon with a special interest in gynaecology she is happy to offer expert advice on conditions affecting the anal canal, rectum and vagina.

Kathryn’s research interests include surgical outcomes in the older, frail patients ( www.opsoc.eu) and translational research into colorectal cancer (IGF Laboratory, University of Bristol). She has 60 peer reviewed publications and is a faculty member on several local and National courses.

Kathryn holds the following roles;

  • co-director for the Older Persons Surgical Outcomes Collaborative (since 2012)
  • NIHR surgical lead for research, West of England (appointed 2015)
  • Scientific Board member of Integrative Cancer Epidemiology, University of Bristol (appointed November 2015)
  • co-director for the Bladder and Bowel Continence group (BABCON), health integration team (HIT), Bristol Health partners
  • Proctology sub-committee member, Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, Royal College of Surgeons elected 2020)
  • Honorary lecturer University of Bristol
