#Patient question of the month

Do you use stitches to close the wound?

We leave all wounds on the anus open after tag removal surgery. The wounds are diamond shaped because most anal skin tags have quite a wide base. When we first started this clinic 5 years ago (YAY!) we experimented with stitching anal wounds after tags were removed. We found that the stitches were poorly tolerated by patients and caused a constant niggle or pain. This was worse when sitting and walking. We have therefore reverted to open wounds similar to when you have a traditional haemorrhoidectomy. Whilst the wounds are still quite painful in the first few weeks, the pain/discomfort is usually limited to toilet time and not during other times in the day.
